My summary of Cherry before using it — Cherry is an eCommerce app using AI technology is all I know.

How does Cherry explain itself in the first minute? “AI-powered price discovery for second-hand treasures”, followed by a QR code to download the app. It then turns out that Cherry isn’t available in my country, which means that I’ll have to do some desk research to learn how Cherry does price discovery.

How does Cherry work? Cherry enables users to discover products using just a screenshot or an image. Let’s say see a product on some Instagram’s account, you take a screenshot and enter it on Cherry to discover the product and compare price deals for it.

Similarly, you might be at a physical store and want to see if you can get the same clothing item cheaper elsewhere. You take a picture of the item and check through Cherry whether you can get it for a cheaper price.

How does Cherry differentiate? The likes of Pinterest and Google and Bing have all built visual search engines, which offer product discovery capabilities similar to Cherry. Ryan Kim, Cherry’s founder and CEO, explained to TechCrunch that Cherry differentiates itself from established visual search products by allowing users to sort results by price, bookmark products and use their search history to come back to products.

Instead of providing generic image search capabilities, Cherry specialises in shopping, providing users with personalised recommendations to help users ‘cherry pick’ the best (priced) products.

Main learning point: Cherry is a nice new product discovery application, using computer vision technology to let user discover products. Cherry uses both Google and Bing to power its application, focusing on price comparison as its main point of differentiation.
