My summary of Spotify AI DJ before using it — I expected a personalised music feed. Similar to the “Wrapped” mix Spotify gives you at the end of each year, I expect the “AI DJ” to do something similar on the fly. I also expect that the feed will include personalised music recommendations.

How does Spotify AI DJ explain itself in the first minute? “All kinds of music, picked by your own AI DJ.”

How does Spotify AI DJ work? As soon I press play on the DJ, he starts talking to me: “What’s going on Marc?” and introduces himself, acknowledging that he’s an AI but specialised in music selection. The DJ explains that he’ll “switch up the vibe after every other couple of songs”, and explains that I can use the small DJ button at the bottom right hand of corner of the screen.

When I tap the DJ icon, the DJ gets that I’m not happy with his previous music selection (the DJ thinks I’m big on Eminem — frown — and picks tracks accordingly). The DJ reverts to my most listened tracks in 2022, playing it safe but providing a nice mix. A few tracks in, the DJ promises to get me going this Monday morning and plays a songs that are clearly based on my previous listening behaviours. There’s nice additional content in the “Lyrics” and “About the artist” sections.

Main learning point: The AI DJ is another way that Spotify caters for my personal music tastes, building on my previous listening behaviours and suggesting new music for me to discover.
