My summary of V0 before using it — I haven’t used V0 yet but have heard that it’s a good tool for generating front-end prototypes, using AI to generate code fast — particularly useful for non developers like me :)
How does V0 explain itself in the first minute? “What can I help you ship?” followed by a prompt generator to start creating my first prototype on V0.
I enter a prompt to create a virtual business card creator app:
I like how V0’s agent tells me about the features of the app I’ve asked it to create and shares suggestions on how to improve the app:
This virtual business card creator app allows users to:
- Input their business information in a clean, user-friendly form.
- See a live preview of their virtual business card with a sleek, professional design.
- Share their virtual business card by copying a unique link (simulated in this example).
The app features:
- A responsive layout that works well on both desktop and mobile devices.
- A modern, gradient background for the main page and the business card itself.
- Clean typography and iconography for easy readability.
- Real-time updates of the business card preview as the user types.
- A “Share Business Card” button that simulates generating a unique link for the card.
To make this app even more professional and feature-rich, you could consider adding the following in the future:
1.The ability to customize the card’s color scheme.
2.Options to add a profile picture or company logo.
3. Social media links integration.
I can then start refining the prototype — adding capabilities (add card download feature) or amending the design (change the gradient background):
One of the things I love about doing these product reviews is when things go wrong :) Like the error message ‘Import Error’ message I get when V0 tries to create the card download capability:
I learn as much about a product from the way in which it handles errors as I do from playing with its capabilities. In this instance the “Fix with V0” button automatically generates a prompt to revise the code to resolve the specific error:
Did V0 deliver on my expectations? Prompting V0 to change the gradient design is when I realise that the quality of output from tools like V0 depends largely on the quality of prompt input. In my example, the design changes I prompted feel minimal to me and I realise that the more specific my prompt the higher the quality of my prototype or application.
Main learning point: Tools like V0 are incredible helpful in bringing product ideas to life, replacing endless slide decks or documents. V0 is a front-end design tool only and I want to try tools like Replit and Cursor to see how I can use them to create and deploy end to end applications. Especially in a world where the skills of product managers, engineers, designers and marketers are converging more and more, tools like V0 will enable to broaden their skills without having to retrain or requiring developer or design support.
